Sophia Vergara on Hypothyroidism

Sofia_Vergara_fashion_dressEmmy-nominated star of hit show "Modern Family" , Sophia Vergara, is now a spokesperson for a campaign to raise awareness of hypothyroidism.  At the age of 28, she was diagnosed with thryoid cancer and had surgery to remove her thyroid. Her thyroidectomy left her with hypothyroidism, a condition that requires her to take medication on a daily basis.

I was very young, and when they tell you that word (cancer), it's like, "What are you talking about?"  You always think, 'death'.  You don't – that's all you think when they tell you that.  So it was – is pretty scary," Vergera said on ABC's "Nightlline"

According to the National Institute of Health, over the last two decades the incidence of thyroid disorders have increased in the United States.  Statistics show that one in eight women, between the ages of 35 – 65 and, one in five women over age 65, will suffer from a thyroid condition during their lifetime. Approximately 30 million people in the United States suffer from a thyroid disorder – though some experts say it's likely double that number. It is suggested that approximately 13 million have not yet been diagnosed.
