Wheat and Hypothyroidism

Today we’ll talk about the relationship
between wheat and hypothyroidism, how this
grain can affect those who have low thyroid
function, and why some doctors and health
care practitioners advise to avoid eating

Why wheat?

Because some of you’re wondering about it,
like Jacqui who wrote to us saying:

Hi, thanks for the great articles recently
on goitrogens and soy…. now we need a
similar article for wheat and products
containing wheat….noodles, bread, flour,
etc. This is another item I’ve been told
to stay away from and need more info on.

OK, let’s see why the consumption of
wheat is controversial, specially in
cases of low thyroid function.

To start with, wheat is one of the grains
that has been consumed by the human race
for relatively little time, fact that has
brought researchers to say that…

Genetically, humans have not fully
adapted to the consumption of wheat
– and
other grains such as barley, rye, oats, rice,
corn, sorghum, and millet.

The thing is that the agricultural period
started about 12,000 years ago approximately.
Ancient man didn’t eat grains!

The hunter-gatherers ate meat, fish, wild
fruits and veggies, nuts and seeds.

Today, wheat is one of the things that
humans consume the most because it’s used
as an ingredient in so many foods… from
the morning to the evening most of us are
eating foods that contain wheat!

This of course causes an overload and a
build up of toxins in the body

You may don’t know it, but wheat is very
complex and hard to digest. It has
gluten and many other proteins that the
body can not digest easily; they clog
the digestive system
causing a myriad of
digestive issues including constipation,
gases and inflammation.

The consumption of wheat can also exacerbate
conditions such as Crohn’s disease, Celiac
disease, diverticulitis and Ulcerative

How does wheat interfere with the health
of the thyroid gland?

Here is how…

We said a moment ago that wheat has gluten,

Well, many studies have shown that gluten
has a similar structure to thyroid cells,
which means that if gluten is eaten by
someone with autoimmune thyroiditis or
Hashimotos’ disease, the inflammation alerts
the immune system and this starts attacking
the thyroid gland… a cascade effect that
can last for many months!

Hashimoto’s disease is the most common
form of hypothyroidism
and many times
is accompanied by other autoimmune conditions
such as Celiac disease, which is an autoimmune
digestive disorder where the person’s body
overreacts to gluten.

This is one of the reasons why people with
autoimmune thyroiditis is advised to stay
away from wheat, and more precisely from

gluten itself…

It’s been found that many people, not
matter if they are experiencing an
autoimmune condition or not, are very
sensitive to gluten – some say that one
in three persons are either sensitive or
allergic to it.

When these people eat wheat and other foods
that contain gluten without knowing about
their food sensitivity, Hashimotos’ disease
can happen as a result.

This is why holistic health care
practitioners advise us to stay away from
gluten as much as we can, and even more
if one has an autoimmune conditions such
as Hashimoto’s disease.

There are many ways to know if you are
sensitive or not to wheat and other grains

ideally is to do it after soaking them
and/or fermenting them. This is the way
ancient cultures did it but with the arrival
of this era of convenience such healthy

      Yes Allison, it would be the same. Soaked, fermented or sprouted wheat is easier to digest and assimilate for many people if it’s eaten in small quantities… you’d have to try those forms and see how you respond, emotionally and physically.

    Regarding the consumption of wheat, I’ve read that it is not good for hypothyroid problems. My question, can you eat sprouted bread, also, brown rice pasta?

      Hi Carmen,

      It all depends on how your body assimilates sprouted bread. Indeed this type of bread is much healthier and eating a small piece or two could be fine. Brown rice in general is easier to digest than wheat and doesn’t bother too many people. We suggest that you pat attention to how you feel when you eat those foods (emotionally and physically) and decide for yourself.

    I have thyroid problems and addisons I take synthroid n dexanethozene daily. What advice can you offer. Still tired all the time deficiency in vitamin d and low potassium I take this daily to. I am 46my n 1/2 yrs of age.

      Our best advise would be to consult a good naturopath to do get a holistic diagnoses and find out how else you can support your body because you may have other nutritional deficiencies – and even though you’re taking supplements you still feel tired. It’s also important to balance your immune system (Addison’s disease is an autoimmune condition and your thyroid problem, we guess, is also autoimmune).     I am very glad to find this article on wheat as i have became very sensitive to it any time i eat any thing that has wheat i feel sleepy haedache burnning sensation on my stomache and rash on my face and running nose and become very sensitive to strong smell i live now on allergy medication i asked my doctor to send me for gultin test he dose not agree that i will have that as i am over 50 but i am suffering as no body undrestands why i dont eat bread why i dont eat cack this that
