Coconut Oil and Weight Loss – Is It True?

I have just come across some more research into the benefits and workings of coconut oil.

You see coconut oil contains a unique fatty acid that happens to stimulate our metabolism, provides an energy source AND promotes weight loss.

I’m sure we are all aware that hypothyroidism is an auto immune system disease and as such is one of the reasons treating it with products supplies by Mr Pharma can be ineffective to as many as 80% of patients.

A few years back a group of scientists had stated, incorrectly, that coconut oil increased LDL.

In fact it increased HDL. This has not been corrected by the media, unfortunately. One possible reason could be the power of the pharmaceutical companies I suppose.

Lauric acid accounts for 50% of the fat in coconut oil. Our bodies convert this into monolaurin. Now this is has anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-protozoa properties. In fact coconut oil contains the most lauric acid of any substance in the world!

A comparison of coconut oil and lard fed to mice at Sydney’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research was led by Nigel Turner and Jiming Ye.

This is what they had to say;

"The medium chain fatty acids like those found in coconut oil are interesting to us because they behave very differently to the fats normally found in our diets," said study leader Turner.

"Unlike the long chain fatty acids contained in animal fats, medium chain fatty acids are small enough to enter mitochondria – the cells' energy burning powerhouses – directly where they can then be converted to energy."

The medium chain fatty acids are the same as those we find in human milk. As we know “mother’s milk” offers extraordinary benefits to the new born, apart from its anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties.

Getting to weight loss. A study at McGill University and published in the Journal of Nutrition reported that several studies had shown weight loss equivalent to 12-36 pounds a year by only replacing the oils used in cooking with coconut oil!!

Most of the commercial oils used in food preparation are altered to allow longevity on the supermarket shelves and for storage in warehouses.  We know these as vegetable oils or polyunsaturated oils.

They now are thinking this may well be one of the worst villains in the spread of thyroid disease.

The conclusion we can take from these various studies is that coconut oil is not a cure but it does boost metabolism and energy levels. Couple this with abandoning processed foodstuffs, eating a balanced diet and having exercise and exposure to Vitamin D and your thyroid will be in better shape and so will you.
